I love brownies....I love chocolate chip cookies. Who wouldn't like them layered together? Needless to say I was stoked to make this recipe! They were even made way earlier in the week than I normally make any of my TWD recipes. While preparing them and getting the ingredients ready I wish that I would have thought to halve the recipe though. This makes an insane amount of brownies that only Ben and I ended up eating. The boys didn't seem to enjoy them.

The recipe was chosen by Beth from
Supplicious. It can be found on pages 94-95 in Dorie's book as well.

The only modification I did was substitute peanut butter chips for the bittersweet ones in the cookie layer. I also skipped the walnuts. My brownies baked up strange though. The bottom layer of brownies were fine. The problem came in with the cookie layer. While it was baking the top seemed to get very brown and seemed done. However, when I removed it from the oven and let it cool I noticed that it was still very gooey inside after the top cracked. We still ate it but it certainly wasn't done all the way through. And if I would have left it in the oven more to bake I am certain that the cookie layer would have been black.

While this recipe was fun to make I probably wouldn't make try it again. Although we did eat all the brownies, raw or not...they were good.

These look way better than mine, peanut butter chips sound really interesting: I have to pick up a bag when I'm vacationing in Canada!!
I just think that if there was ever a recipe that seemed like it wouldn't work out, this was it! (especially since you usually bake cookies for 20 minutes or so, and these were supposed to bake for almost an hour!!) They look great, though. I'm sorry they were disappointing after all that work, but you did a great job. (Pretty blog, too! - thanks for visiting. Nice to meet you!)

It seems that no matter what happened to this recipe - raw or burnt, chewy or gooey - it still tasted great. I hope you give it another try. I tented foil over the top after a half hour so the cookie didn't burn.
So many people had this issue with these. I would have eaten them all too, though!
Wow I love your second picture- they look amazing! I have to say I had the same crust issue but it looks like your brownies were enjoyed anyways. And now I'm dying to make some of that alfredo, too...
As long as they were yummy, who cares what they look like! :) Great pics!
Your pictures are great. They look really good, mine were also still raw except for the very outer edges. So annoying.
Hmmmm. I wonder what didn't work? Anyway, they look yummy!
It seems like a lot of people had problems with these cracking and not being done. The pictures look delicious anyway!
I hard a hard time with the baking time as well. Still, I'm glad you enjoyed these!
Yours is not the only one I've seen do that and I really want to know why?! ;) Dorie, hello, anyone? Answers? Glad you still considered it edible!
I'm totally on the exact same page as you! Mine looked deceptively done, tested done, then after cooling, de-panning and cutting, the cookie layer started to ooze. Oh well, next week is a new beginning!
Lots of problems with this recipe. I had to tent my cookies. But still kind of irresistable, right?
I felt the same way! They look lovely tho.. :)
I am definitely going to have to make these again with peanut butter. they lok fabulous!
So many people had problems with this one! Mine actually worked out okay! Yours look yummy!
If you change your mind and try it again, I recommend covering the top with foil once the cookie layer is browned to your liking. It really helps!
I love the peanut butter chip addition! I'm sorry you weren't a fan, but hey, eating the brownies/cookies slightly undercooked is like eating the batter anyways, no? Really? No?
The addition of pb chips would have sent me right over the edge. Too bad you didn't love these, I have them hidden in the back of my freezer so I can't see them!
Sorry you had problems with the cookie layer, but your brownie looks great! I love the ratio of cookie to brownie...
I am with you on this - they taste good raw or cooked.
This was a heartbreaker of a recipe. Tasty though, but a bit of a disappointment from an "ooze" perspective. At least we all had good company with the underdoneness.
Well, you were not alone in this one. Seems like most of us had trouble with these.
But they were still tasty.
